Emotional Wellbeing

Emotional Wellbeing refers to how well we are able to process our emotions and cope with life challenges. Our ability to manage stress, create positive social connections, and taking care of our Physical and Mental Health, taking time to rest and recover may all help us to maintain good Emotional Wellbeing. Sometimes, things get on top of us and it’s difficult to find the right balance. If you are struggling with your Emotional Wellbeing, please speak to a member of the Streetwise Team who can help you positively manage your Emotional Wellbeing.

Healthy Relationships

We all have relationships, whether they are family relationships, friendships or ‘romantic’ or ‘intimate’ relationships. All of these different types of relationships can give you the best feelings in the world, but they can also be really stressful! Positive relationships are about giving, taking, compromising, communicating, enjoying the good times and supporting each other through the bad times. Relationships don’t just happen; you have to work at them to get the best from them! Read more about relationships in our Streetwise leaflet.

Period Poverty

Period Poverty means struggling to access Period Products and, can sometimes mean not having a good knowledge of menstruation due to financial constraints. In the UK 1 in 10 girls can’t afford to buy menstrual products and 1 in 7 have struggled to. This can result in Young Women missing school because of the issue. Streetwise can help by providing registration to the M-Card Scheme, which entitles you to access free, confidential and discreet sanitary products and advice at our site in Newcastle City Centre.

Cost of Education

Being unable to afford the things (uniform/ trips/ travel) can be really stressful and worrying. Often this can impact in young people feeling like they would rather miss school than have to attend without the things they need. If you would like to have a chat, speak to a Streetwise worker, some of whom are already working in local schools, or a trusted teacher to ask for help.

Cost of Living Support

The cost of living crisis is having an impact on us all, we are here to help and support young people and their families to navigate how they may overcome any worries or concerns. We also support our young people with food, period products and warm spaces.

Social Media

Social Media is a great way to keep in touch with friends, create and share content and keep updated with topics that interest us. But while Social Media can sometimes make us feel connected and included, ‘heavy use’ of social media can impact our health and wellbeing or make us feel lonelier. It can also make us feel more anxious or depressed, depending on the content we view.

Building Resilience

Resilience is the ability to be happy, successful and strong again after something difficult or bad has happened. When things go wrong, resilience is what helps you to cope and get through hard times. Sometimes it makes you even stronger than you were before. Some people are naturally quite resilient, but for lots of others it can take time to build up the skills – everyone’s different.

Peer Pressure, Violence, Crime, Harm and Risks

If you have experienced peer pressure, you are certainly not alone. It can be easy to get lost in a world where we feel pressured to keep up with everyone around us. Peer pressure is not something we can simply escape from. It is something we learn to manage, rather than avoid altogether. Streetwise staff can help you to learn small and effective ways to handle peer pressure, helping you to feel empowered to make choices that work for you.

Sexual Health and Relationships

We know that some Young People are thinking about sex, or having sex and it’s natural to be curious. Thinking about sex and relationships can lead to a lot of confusing emotions and questions, but you don’t have to work through them on your own! If you would like to talk to someone about sexual health, relationships, or contraception, come and speak to a member of the Streetwise Team who will provide non-judgemental, confidential advice and information.

Drugs and Alcohol

A drug is any chemical you take, which can affect the way you feel. This includes alcohol, nicotine (including Vapes!) or any other substance taken as a pill, liquid or powder. A drug can be a headache tablet. Generally though, when we refer to drugs, we mean those that are often illegal and used for enjoyment or any other non-medical reason.

Debt, Money Management, Welfare Rights

Dealing with or experiencing debt or money worries can have often impact your mental health and wellbeing. Understanding where and how to get advice can help you manage those worries and get support. Streetwise project workers can support and signpost you to the help you need to feel in control of your finances.

Skills, Training and Social Action

At Streetwise, we understand that our young people have the potential to change the world! Through our NCS Programme, young people are supported to develop their skills through training and different experiences. These experiences can lead to volunteering and opportunities for social action. ‘Social Action’ empowers young people to come together to improve their lives and the lives of others and help solve the problems that are important in their communities.

Your Rights

We all share lots of the same rights, but also have different ones depending on our age and needs. These include, the right to your own belief or religion and the right to be protected from violence and abuse. You have the right to a standard of living that meets your needs. You have the right to an education, even if you don’t go to school. If you’re in work, you have the right to breaks, time off for holidays and to be kept safe. If you feel your rights are not being respected, or want to understand more about your rights, speak to a member of the Streetwise Team.
